Finite element analysis is applied to a wide range of structures, from simple spheres and EM windows to custom configurations. Stress and deflection are determined using ABAQUS® large-scale nonlinear finite element modeling. Saint-Gobain engineers have over 15 years of experience with this powerful analytical program. The analysis ensures design structural integrity, and verify that there is adequate antenna clearance under even the highest design wind conditions.
The analysis is based upon wind pressure coefficients measured in wind tunnel testing. In addition to spherical shapes, wind tunnel tests can and have been carried out for custom structures. The analysis captures the geometric nonlinearity of flexible structures, and the unique biaxial properties of SHEERGARD® fabrics and composites.
Finite element results are verified against extensive testing which evaluates the strength of SHEERGARD® materials in real-world loading conditions. Our fabrics undergo not only tensile testing, but also biaxial, load duration, drumburst, and a wide range of environmental testing. Sandwich composites undergo tensile, compressive, bending, and drumburst tests, in addition to a full range of environmental tests.
